My father, August Alexander Jurva, was born in Pudasjarvi,Oululanni. Finland of Iso-Jaakko Jurvansuu and Amanda Ekdahl. We had relatives who lived in Finlayson, Mn. Bro.of Iso-Jaakko. Hecame over with 2 sons and the immigration people changed his jame to Jacobson (his name being Jacob Johan Jurvanen) The 2 boys never married, that I know of. One of the girls married a Wilson and their son had 5 children. We knew of 2, Jim and Judy and 3 younger ones were adopted out. Maybe you knew of themRoy Jurva

I guess I have some of your names in my tree. But as they often changed names as they moved, perhaps that doesn't mean much. For example, when the farm was sold, the new owners may have taken that name. There's a lot of names in the list, but I noticed at least these:
Girs, Pakala, Strang, Haarala.
Just off the top of my head, Girs farm was in the north (Veteli vasan) and I have some 5 generations from about 1600.
Actually, my cousin was a Haarala, his grandfather was Saloman Haarala who was a postmaster in the New York Mills or Sebeka area a century ago.

Found this site very thorough and interesting. I'm sure my aunt's husband, Reino Aho, is related to Pastor Raymond Aho somehow. I don't know much about the family tree outside the direct family members. My Uncle Ray Aho is now a widower since my dad's sister has died as of 4/2005. I don't have a lot of time to do genealogy, but I do like knowing a bit about my forebears. Thanks for your friendly site.

Seeking any information on the Fossi family in the USA. Especially trying to find out, if Matti Fossi had children there. I know that he died in Duluth in 1923. Had he children and where they are now (maybe grandchildren)? Matti Fossi was my grandfathers brother (and also my fathers name was Matti)and born 22.10.1870. Matti Fossi's brother Juho (born 30.05.1873)has gone also to USA.

I have been to your site many times, and, I'm finally getting around to comparing the surnames you have with mine. There are so many that are similar in my book of ancestry, that it will take time for me to list them all. I'll get back to you in the near future, also, could you send me your e-mail address? I'm sure we'll be in contact more than once.....

I have Johnson's and Maki's in my family history. Oscar Maki (Syrjamaki in Finland)emigrated to Houghton County, MI or Embarrass, MN in 1899 and married Sofia Suihkonen who emigrated to Embarass, MN in 1895. They married either in MN or MI between 1899-1903. Their first child, Oscar M. Maki was born in MN in 1903 and all their other children were born in Houghton County, MI (Calumet, Laurium).

Judging by US Census data, Sofia moved back to MN to live with a daughter after Oscar passed away between 1930-40. She is most likely buried in MN.

If anyone has any info on marriage, births, deaths please email me. Kittos!
